Insulated
Double Glazed Sealed Units
Our double glazed insulated sealed units are suitable for
use in extensions, conservatories and out-buildings. Either way, the
added light and airy spaces created can be used as an office at home,
gymnasium, studio, spa, games room or garage, often without the need
of any planning permission or building regulations. Please refer to
our planning advice section for more detailed information.
In standard form our insulated sealed units consist of a 10mm thick toughened
outer layer and 8mm thick toughened inner layer, with a 20mm wide argon gas filled
cavity in-between, which gives an overall unit thickness of 38mm. Both the inner
and outer layers of glass are toughened to meet BS safety regulations, and are
very difficult to break in ordinary circumstances, if they do happen to break
they shatter into many small pieces as opposed to large shards so as not to cause
serious injury. The 20mm argon gas filled cavity offers excellent sound insulation
as well as superb heat insulation saving on energy bills. In addition to this,
all of our standard units have a special Low-E coating that helps to reflect
heat in the summer months, and yet allows heat to enter the room in the winter
months. All of our sealed units are bonded together with a structural grade of
sealant making them well suited for minimal frameless glazing projects. All of
our sealed units carry a 10 year guarantee for the integrity of the seal. To
give you a comparison, ordinary domestic double glazed units found in your standard
UPVC, wood or aluminium framed windows at home will use just 4mm or 6mm thick
glass with a maximum cavity of just 12mm and are never structurally sealed and
very rarely have any low-e coating, hence their performance is very limited compared
to our specification. Our specification is actually what would be expected in
a plush commercial setting as part of a city office block, but at a fraction
of the price.
Our standard modular units are 900mm wide and 2800mm tall including the blacked
out area at the top designed to mask the roof cavity. We find that the 900mm
wide module offers good flexibility to create most suitable size and shape of
builds required. If such a module size does not suit your project dimensions,
bespoke unit sizes can be made up as a special order, which in conjunction with
our 900mm modules can go to enclose the size of area required. Please feel free
to contact us for a quotation in such instances.
Certain upgrades are also available upon request, such as colour tints, self
cleaning coatings, laminated glass options, triple glaze options, integral remote
controlled motorized blackout blinds, automated sliding doors, concertina doors,
and insulated aluminium roller shutters if being used as a garage. Many other
upgrades are also available, please refer to our upgrades sections for further
brief details.
Upgrades
A list of commonly requested upgrades are as briefly noted below. Please
feel free to call and discuss any specific upgrade that you may have in mind.
Colour Tinted or Reflective Glass
All of our standard modular sealed units are made from clear glass which tends
to have an intrinsic green tinge to it when viewed from an angle. As an option
a clear solar film can be professionally applied to the inner pane of glass giving
the appearance of a tinted glass. A variety of tint colours are available primarily
from shades of brown, green and blue each with thier own specific charactor to
best suit their intended environment.
In addition to tinted films we can also offer reflective films which give a mirror
effect to the glass and again are available in a range of metallic tints. During
the day a building with reflective film applied to it will simply reflect it's
surroundings making it almost invisible. We should point out that if inside a
building fitted with reflective film at night time with the light on, it is usually
quite difficult to see outside although those outside can see in. There are some
ways to remedy this by moderating the level of internal light and adding some
external light. Please feel free to call for advice on such points.
Privacy Glass
If you have a glass flank to one of our buildings that maybe faces a neighbour
and requires a level of privacy, we have a special film that can be applied to
the inner pane of glass that gives a semi opaque sand washed or etched glass
effect. The film allows light to pass through whilst still keeping your privacy.
Self Cleaning Glass
A special polymer sealant can be site applied to the glass after construction,
the sealant is applied to the outer pane only and helps to reduce the surface
tension of the glass. The result is that very little will stick to the glass,
and any dirt that does will be washed away each time it rains, in effect making
the glass low maintenance.
Laminated Security Glass
As an upgrade the inner pane of our sealed units can be made from laminated
glass. Normally the inner pane is 8mm thick toughened glass, for the laminated
upgrade we make the inner pane using 11.5mm thick laminated glass. The laminate
comprises of two layers of 5mm thick toughened glass with a clear 1.52mm thick
PVB (poly vinyl butyral) layer in-between. The PVB layer is very strong and holds
the glass together even if the glass is shattered, hence giving a greater level
of security if someone was trying to break in through the glass. To give you
an idea the thickness of the PVB layer on a typical laminated car windscreen
is just 0.38mm - 0.76mm thick.
Triple Glazed Units
As standard all of our sealed units are double glazed. For added sound and heat
insulation triple glazing can be an option. To upgrade to a triple glazed unit
we add an additional 5mm pane of toughened glass and another 20mm spacer bar.
So altogether our triple glazed units consist of an outer pane of 10mm thick
toughened glass + a 20mm argon filled space + 5mm thick central pane of low-e
coated toughened glass + another 20mm argon filled space + the inner pane of
8mm thick toughened glass. The overall thickness of such triple glazed sealed
units is just under 64mm. Such a specification of glass can have a U-value equal
to that of a conventional block built wall which can help in instances where
the local planners insist upon achieving such efficient U-values.
Triple glazed units can still be fitted with laminated glass or motorized internal
blinds. |
